Veggie Delivery Day

Potatoes, turnips collards, broccoli
It's another Friday, so it's another box-ful-of-veggies day!
Here's what I got:
Turnips (I think)
Potatoes
More kale
More collards (lots, but not quite as much as last time)
More broccoli
More peas
Cabbage (I think)
Romaine lettuce
Strawberries
one onion
My main question is, what do I do with the cabbage? I can handle the collards, the broccoli, peas, lettuce and onion.  I'm going to use the turnips to make mashed turnips (like mashed potatoes, but with turnips).
Kale, turnips, peas, potatoes, peas, cabbage (in the back right)

Matt used my cabbage for bowling practice.

Judy convinced me that raw turnips were good.
They were not.

  1. Yum! Cabbage! I like to shred it and use it as a salad topper or wrap filling. One of my favourite lunches is a tortilla filled with hummus and cabbage and other veggies. (And it's totally low-cal!)

Other than that, I have no idea what to do with cabbage, but I am super jealous of your awesome CSA.

  2. My dad always shreds the cabbage into big chunks (like we did with the collards), puts it all in a pan and just cooks it for a while. I'm not sure what he adds to it... maybe some salt and pepper. It always tastes good to me!

What are you going to do with the potatoes? I prefer mine seasoned and roasted.

  3. You could make slaw with your cabbage. Gloria Jones (the dean herself!) has a really good slaw recipe that eliminates mayonaise.

There's a good slaw recipe in some Real Simple that goes with fish tacos, and it is delicious!

  4. I roasted the potatoes. I cooked up all of the veggies today, except the cabbage. Still not sure about it. The kale chips were not as good today as they were last week.

  5. You can steam the cabbage, or put it in a skillet like Amie said with olive oil, salt and pepper. I like mine with a little vinegar, but I love vinegar. My favorite way to eat cabbage which Dad used to make us try as kids is just to eat it raw with salt or ranch. I just cut out wedges and salt it. Slaw is great as well and last week I was craving a salad, but didn't have any lettuce, so I shredded it and made a salad with it. Super crunchy and yummy! Sorry this is so long, but cabbage rolls are also delicious and easily freezable for lunches later!

  6. Rachel, never apologize for a long comment. : ) In fact, you should comment more often.

  7. I love the idea of this CSA thing. I looked up some around here, but will probably have to split it with somebody...it's pretty pricey! I will be commenting more often! You should see how many times I have started to comment on your birthday post and deleted it because it didn't come out right! Have fun today!

  8. Yes, please comment more often. I live for comments (really). My CSA was $250 for 3 months of weekly deliveries. It says it serves 2-4, so I'm going to split it with a coworker from now on. It was a lot up front, but then being able to split it will help with that. The amount I'm getting right now is overwhelming anyway.
