Delivery Day

Today was CSA delivery day! I was quite nervous.  Here's a shot of my box, packed full of veggies.  It included: broccoli, sugar peas, strawberries, turnips, onions, collard greens, mustard greens and something that I think is possibly kale.

Yes, this is overwhelming.  It's a lot of food.  I've had two different co-workers offer to split the box with me in the future, and I think I will take them up on the offer. I don't want to waste any food.

a real turnip!

a collard green as big as my head!
They included some recipes in the box, but if any of you have recipes or suggestions for collards, turnips and greens, please let me know!

  1. What a haul! Your turnip looks like a beet, though. Maybe you should call up Dwight Schrute for confirmation (weren't his parents beet farmers?!?).

For greens (turnip, collard, the like), I chop them up into a sort of manageable shred, getting rid of those big ribs in the middle or tough ends. Then I warm some olive oil in a skillet, sauté a little garlic and/or onion in the oil, and then sauté the greens until they're wilted. You can cook them to your preferred state of crispiness.

Then, you can splash in a little chicken broth (maybe a tablespoon or two, 1/4 c at the most) and let them simmer a little. That liquid will draw off any bitterness. You could also sprinkle in a little sugar.

I often stir in a little balsamic vinegar before the broth and let that cook down. Delicious!

There's also the boil the greens with some oil and sugar in a big ol pot like my grandma used to do. And don't forget the hamhock... though this probably method counters the healthiness of said greens.

As for the turnips, I'd roast those bad boys with some olive oil and/or butter. Maybe a pinch or two of sugar.

  2. Snap, I have no idea if it is a radish or a beet. I google imaged both of them, but couldn't see a difference. I suppose I should go with what you say, though, Britt, since you are from Fountain Inn.

  3. It is is a beet, it seems rather small.

What a fun box! I'm glad you got at least some strawberries!

  4. This is a crazy fun idea. I respect it. I also love the picture of the collard green.
